Once upon a time in a faraway classroom sat twenty lonely desks just watching the flowers bloom. For all summer they waited and watched the clock, but as the afternoons dragged all they heard was tick-tock. They waited and waited all shiny and ready for the first bell to ring so they could stand steady. They knew as soon as the tardy bell rang twenty happy students would run in with a bang. For each day of class the Pledge of Allegiance was recited and then the class song was sung-Oh the students were excited! The teacher was happy and the students obeyed, and they worked well together and everyone was praised. But school hadn’t started yet so the desks continued to wait; they couldn’t wait until the calendar turned to the beginning of school date.
But you see my friends this story continues with a thrill, for these desks are anxiously waiting for you to fill. They are waiting and waiting for the bell to ring so you can come and you can sing. They know that we will do projects and laugh, and every afternoon we will have fun with our math. We’ll learn of volcanoes and mountains and clouds. We will even learn of other countries and make our parents proud. We will color lots of pictures and read lots of books and sometimes I’ll let you become your own little cooks. Through worksheets and spelling bees we will all become wise, we will learn of animals and insects…even of flies. There will be show-and-tell and talent shows, and every week in P.E. we will run on our toes.
So the desks keep on waiting but are excited for they know, that soon the first bell is about ready to blow. We will meet that first day for fun times and learning, and hopefully you will leave with excitement and yearning. For this year we will become better together, and the lessons you learn will stay with you forever! I can’t wait to meet you so be ready to fill your desks, and don’t worry on the first day we won’t be having any tests!
